WOOLSHED CREEK HUT: A WINDY WALK WITH A RAINBOW FINISH

We finally made it overnight! The forecast was not ideal but we don't have a weekend every day so we gave it a go and it paid off pretty well.

On Friday I said bye to my mates in the day care earlier than usual and at 6 my tent was already put up in Rakaia Gorge Campground, an hour drive from Christchurch. I spent the evening throwing rocks to the river and listening to raindrops drumming on the top of my tent made me sleep super quickly.
In the morning the rain was gone but the wind came instead. It was blowing angrily and it accompanied us all the way along the Miners Track up the hill and then down to the beautiful Wooldshed Creek Hut. I could tell mum would use a little help, that is me walking a bit more, but too bad, I was feeling lazy.
We arrived early which was lucky because the hut filled up quickly and the latecomers even had to put up their tents since there were no beds left! Good for me though because I got to choose who to make friends with. I decided for two nice girls from Christchurch, who I did a lot of high fives with, and then a baby boy, who I was teaching how to stand up and walk. I also went to explore water caves and the Emerald Pool.

There were so many exciting people and things happening all over the place that there was no way I was going to go to sleep at 8 like I always do. And that was good because the rain came again and while it was fighting with the sun it made one of the most beautiful rainbows I had ever seen.
After early breakfast it was time to say bye to my new friends and start walking back. It was a beautiful sunny morning, the wind left for good and I felt full of energy and decided to walk a bit more than yesterday. This time it was mostly downhill so not a big deal really. First I was looking for pole markers and whenever I found one I had to hug it. When it got boring I started to count my steps and the final leg I spent gathering super cool stuff (understand: rocks, sticks and pine cones) to paint on once I get back home.

Mum says those 5 kilometres took us more than 4 hours but I think she must have made a horrible mistake!
