CANADA V: IT IS NICE TO HAVE A DOGGIE

And now I even have two. One is bigger, one is smaller. One is whiter, one is browner. Their names are Ernie a Desi. They are old and they do not want to go hiking with us but it is nice that when we come home someone is waiting for us.

Mum and I arrived to Vancouver Island yesterday. We took a morning ferry from Richmond and in two hours we were in Nanaimo. The ferry was huge and it was not only able to take onboard two of us but also our big car and a lot of other cars. We spent most of the time on the sundeck but didn´t see any dolphins or whales, only a few seagulls.

After we landed in Nanaimo we went to explore Morrell Sanctuary with its nice lake full of toads and Beaver Pond with no beavers. The walk to the Ammonite Falls is short, but the last 50 metres are pretty adventurous. There actually was the sign that said “track closed”, but mum said we didn´t walk all the way here to just turn around and go home. So we climbed down the series of ropes to stand at the base of a very nice waterfall and we had it all for ourselves.

But then it was time to move on and take over our new house. Ernie and Desi live in Cumberland on the east coast of central Vancouver Island and their parents, Emma and Peter, were going away for a week and needed someone to take care of them. So here I am. I like to pet my new dogs gently and sometimes not so gently. They lick my fingers when I finish with my dinner and before we fall asleep in the bed we jump on each other.

This morning I went for a short walk with them and my “caa caa” and then we set off to climb Mount Arrowsmith. It was our first Canadian trip that we never finished. Mount Arrowsmith is a big mountain and we could see the snow all around, but we couldn´t even get to the saddle! Mum said it was too dangerous and that sometimes turning around is the best decision but I really liked the ropes and I think she is just getting lazy. We spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach chasing tiny little crabs and it was not bad either.

I like Vancouver Island more than I liked Richmond and there might be a couple of reasons for it. First I have dogs and no cats. Gilli and Charley I had in Richmond I almost never saw. Charley was so scared of us that he ran away the minute his parents left and never came back. Gilli was too old and skinny to do the same things so she was hiding behind the couch all the time. Super boring. Second Richmond was a city and it was flat, Cumberland is a village and there are mountains all over the place. Well, in Richmond I got to spent quite a lot of time at a very nice playground, went to the cool old cannery, a night market and also to eat (fish & chips!) out. I don´t know if any of these things is going to happen here but you can tell I am happier. And do not ask me why.

Mum says tomorrow something exciting is happening so I will better go to bed now so tomorrow is here already.

Your Annie
