AUSTRALIA V: KOALAS ARE AWESOME

I saw four of them today and they were pretty cool. To be honest at first I didn´t even notice them because they were just sitting high in the trees and were having their nap. Mum was pointing to them but despite the fact I can now point to things myself, say “there” and require people to look in that direction, I just didn´t get what she wanted.

However everything changed when some people came with loads of eucalyptus branches and the koalas woke up in an instant and started to jump around and stuff themselves with the leaves. Then I could see them very well and they were awesome. And sooo cute: I wanted to give them a pat but the lady said they only look like teddy bears but they actually have super sharp claws. Well, those I have as well as mum hasn´t got any scissors since they confiscated ours at the airport in Cambodia.

The koalas were not the only animals I got to see today because mum and I went to visit Blackbutt Reserve in the morning. The reserve is not far from our house and they keep a lot of species which only live in Australia – mum said they are called endemic. Which means you can´t see them in Czech and you can´t see them in New Zealand either. Strange. There were lazy wombats (their square poo I saw for the first time when we went for a walk to the 60 foot waterfall – see AUSTRALIA III: THERE ARE LEECHES IN THE WATERFALL!), only little kangaroos and big emus. But my favorite was a bird which has a really complicated name – Tawny Frogmouth. I was just getting ready to tell mum that it was a nice owl when the lady who was feeding them said they actually are not owls.

Mum and I spent a few good days exploring the area around Cardiff. To get to the Hunter Wetlands National Park we had to change once, but I don´t mind trains, there is a lot going on around. The center of the park lies among nice little lakes and there were a lot of birds all around. We went for a short walk and climbed on the tower where even more birds could be seen. Inside they held a reptile show and I got to touch… a crocodile!!! Woohoo! They look super slimy, but in fact their skin is really dry. They had a great playground at the Hunter´s as well and we could have spent there much longer because when we got to the train station again, mum realized we had 55 minutes to go. Boooring :-(!

It was very windy yesterday but it didn´t seem to be so bad until we got out from the bus at the wharf in Newcastle and started to walk along the Nobbys Beach to the lighthouse and further to the tip of the breakwater. There we got pretty wet because the waves were huge and they were coming over the wall which I think was built to stop them. Didn´t work very well yesterday. Then mum decided it was time for a snack and she started to feed me on the beach. Even though the scenery was nice, the yogurt was full of sand in an instant and it was grinding between my teeth. Even the art deco sea baths were all flooded and it was obviously not the best day for a walk along the coast. But when we climbed down from the cathedral, it calmed down a bit and we could even have a nice coffee without being blown away.

I shot a short video for you:

Tomorrow there is a children´s books reading in the Cardiff library where mum and I are heading. If there are at least as many toys as there were on Thursday´s Read and Rhyme and if I can have them all (I don´t like sharing these days), it will be cool.

Your Annie
