AUSTRALIA IV: MY DOG IS A DRUG ADDICT

His name is Max, he is a staffy cocker spaniel cross, he is 11 years old and he is going blind. It is all good. What is worse is that he takes drugs. And what is really, really bad is that mum helps him with it. She just came to the kitchen, where he was waiting for his dinner, with a huge syringe full of clear liquid, pulled the skin on his neck and gave him a shot. Then he just walked away and started stuffing himself with delicious looking chicken breasts with rice his “parents” made and froze for him.

Max´s “parents” are Mark and Sandra from Cardiff, which is some 12 kilometres south from Newcastle, the second biggest city of New South Wales, and 150 kilometres north from Sydney. Yesterday Mark and Sandra left to Austria, which is in Europe: I know where it is because I have already been there (check out AUSTRIA: FIRST SKI TEASING. OR WILL IT BE SNOWBOARDING?). Anyway Sandra is 75 years old, she got a stipendia and she is going to study there for half a year. Yes, she IS 75 and she IS a student. And no, we are not staying for 6 months. Mark is coming back in 4 weeks and since today until then mum and I are going to take care of this drug addict Max.

In the morning Lynn (AUSTRALIA: LOOKING AFTER “DEAD” ALPACAS) drove us to Sydney where we caught a train and two and a half hours later we were in our new home. It is very different from our farm: there is far less stuff and no urns. There are no carpets and everything is super clean. Half of the things on the shelves look really fragile (and they are in my reach, yay!) and each of them obviously has its specific place. There is much less toys, although I found a doll in a doll in a doll in a doll. Mum told me it was a Russian doll or Matryoshka and it was good fun slamming it against the wooden floor.

There is also no child bed, so I can sleep in a big bed with mum again, woohoo! And no high chair to keep me seated while eating, woohoo! And no pram (I am not sure yet whether it is woohoo or not, I will decide soon).

We have a terrace and a garden, where I am going to be a lot. Guess why? It´s hot here! Only 300 kilometres north of Mittagong and such a big difference! Do Australians really call these sunny, 25 degrees days winter?

Anyway back to Max. When we arrived and I got to meet him for the first time I was not scared of him because he looks exactly like Brewsky did. (Well, he is a bit thinner. And he is not so grey.) But now after I saw that syringe sticking out of his fat neck, I might have changed my mind. You never know what to expect from junkies, do you? I think I will keep an eye on him.

Your Annie
